Golden Evergreen Wreath Christmas Wreaths, Flowers and Decorations The symbolism surrounding Christmas and Hanukkah decorations is amazing. For example a wreath represents eternity. This is because of its circular shape which signifies it has no beginning and no end. In addition, Christmas wreaths are traditionally made from evergreen leaves. The evergreen tree does not shed its leaves in the winter thus symbolizing eternal life. Christmas decoration colors also have different meaning. Historians think the tradition of displaying Christmas decorations dates back to the 15th century. Then in London it was a custom that homes and parish churches display ivy, holly and other various natural decorations. People felt that the heart-shaped leaves of ivy symbolized Jesus coming to earth and that holly provided protection against witches. Plus its thorns and red berries represented the Crown of Thorns worn by Jesus at his crucifixion. The traditional selection of red, green and gold decorations is purposeful also. Gold is one of the first colors associated with Christmas. It symbolizes royalty as it was one of the three gifts of the Magi. Red symbolizes the blood of Jesus shed during crucifixion. And again green symbolizes eternal life as it comes from the evergreen tree. In 1839 a Lutheran priest by the name of Johann Wichern came up with the idea to use a wagon wheel to symbolize the approach of Christmas. Using the wheel he would use red and white candles to reflect the Advent season. In the Roman Catholic Church, the season of Advent is four Sundays in December each one taking on a different theme: On the First Sunday, the church looks forward to the Second Coming of Christ. On the Second Sunday, the church reviews the message that John the Baptist preached. His message was for Christians to "prepare the way of the Lord". On the Third Sunday, which is referred to as Gaudete Sunday, the theme is again surrounding the joy Christians have by the coming of the Saviour. The reason for this date is that in 1918 on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, all major hostilities of World War I were formally ended. The day was originally termed Armistice Day and was created to celebrate the service of all U.S. military veterans. President Woodrow Wilson gave an eloquent speech in 1919 during which he commended the men and women of the United States military. A brief excerpt from his speech goes as follows "To us in America the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations". Armistice Day and Remembrance Day are celebrated in other countries as a remembrance to the end of World War I. However in 1954, Veterans Day became the official name for our United States day to honor our military men and women. Veterans Day differs from Memorial Day. While both days honor our military, Memorial Day is designated to honor those who died while fighting for our country. Veterans Day is designated to honor all of the military folks who have served our country. Often you will see it spelled Veteran's or Veterans' Day but in reality there is no apostrophe. The day is designated to honor all military veterans. Therefore the singular meaning denoted by an apostrophe does not apply. Normal activities like travel and large family gatherings are issues of concern rather than care free common place events. Families are forced to find new and creative ways to share the traditions of Thanksgiving with their loved ones. The origination of Thanksgiving dates back to 1621. During a harsh winter when the Pilgrims first landed in America, they were able to survive by the generosity of the Native Americans that shared food with them. To repay their new friends, the Pilgrims held a three day feast. The bounty they shared included dried fruits, boiled pumpkin, turkey, venison and other foods. A slightly different menu from what we are accustomed to but no doubt a delightful feast at that time. Over the decades the theme of a celebration of harvest has continued to evolve. Today we think of Thanksgiving as a time to give thanks for our foundation of this great Nation. Of course it is also the official start of the holiday season and a special time of fellowship with family and friends. After consistent encouragement from Sarah Josepha Hale, writer of "Mary Had a Little Lamb", President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a nation wide holiday in 1863. Goodness And Light Bouquet Halloween games, traditions and covid safe activities For all of us this pandemic has been stressful to say the least. We are discovering new and ingenious ways to do things. Practicing all of the safety guidelines we must follow to stay healthy and keep others safe as well has been and will continue to be challenging. Take for example the tradition of Halloween trick or treating. This is always such a fun time for our little one dressing up as their favorite Disney or Super Hero character. Now we need to look at some other ways to celebrate. Bobbing for apples or "dooking" as the Scots call it, has been around for centuries. Apples are placed in a large tub of water. As they are floating children take turns trying to grab the apples with their teeth. Another method is to hold a fork between the teeth while kneeling on a chair and try to stab the apple. Still another old tradition was to hang syrup coated scones from strings and have the children try to eat the scone without using their hands to touch it. These date back for centuries but not as popular as they once were. More for adults, in Ireland and Britain, a long standing Halloween tradition was to predict the future partner or spouse of someone. This was done by peeling an apple in one single strip. Once complete the apple peeling was thrown over the shoulder. It was expected that when the peeling fell to the ground it would spell the first letter of the name of someone's future spouse. Another old tradition in that part of the world was to roast hazelnuts on an open fire. The person roasting would name one hazelnut for themselves and one for the person they wanted to be with. If the hazelnuts jumped away from the heat it was a bad sign that they should not be together. If the hazelnuts roasted quietly together it was good sign that the two people were meant for each other. Modern day games are creative and fun for children and adults. Make a Wish Breast Cancer Awareness Month October is recognized world wide as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The month is designated as a special time to bring awareness to this illness and to the importance of early detection. Every year some studies reflect a staggering 458,000 women die from Breast Cancer and 1.38 Million new cases occur world wide. This disease is not just isolated to only under developed countries but it is indiscriminate and effects developed countries as well. Each year in the United States alone there are more than 245,000 women that are diagnosed. Sadly over 40,000 women actually die from the disease each year. This disease also occurs in males at much lower rate of 1% of the male population. While most of those diagnosed with the illness are women at the age of 50 or older, there is a smaller number of younger women also diagnosed each year. That number is estimated to be 10% of the total which effects women under the age of 45. Breast Cancer is relentless and steals the health of so many in the world. While the statistics are alarming, there is a some positive news to report. Breast Cancer cases had an increase of 4% during the period from 1975 through 1989. The good news is that due to women becoming increasing proactive about early screening and advances in modern medicine, cases of Breast Cancer diagnosis has decreased by 39%. More positive news is that studies reflect that nearly 322,600 breast cancer deaths have been prevented through 2015. With continued emphasis on preventive screening and advances in medicine, hopefully these positive trends will continue to drastically reduce the loss of life. The World Health Organization (WHO) promotes numerous programs that are dedicated to the national cancer control and awareness. They try to help countries that have lower incomes provide better education about the importance of early detection. Many of these countries are not wealthy enough to afford expensive Mammography equipment.
