The pandemic has left one of our favorite holidays, Thanksgiving, in a state of flux.  Normal activities  like travel and large family gatherings are issues of concern rather than care free common place events.  Families are forced to find new and creative ways to share the traditions of Thanksgiving with their loved ones.

The origination of Thanksgiving dates back to 1621. During a harsh winter when the Pilgrims first landed in America, they were able to survive by the generosity of the Native Americans that shared food with them. To repay their new friends, the Pilgrims held a three day feast. The bounty they shared included dried fruits, boiled pumpkin, turkey, venison and other foods. A slightly different menu from what we are accustomed to but no doubt a delightful feast at that time.

Over the decades the theme of a celebration of harvest has continued to evolve. Today we think of Thanksgiving as a time to give thanks for our foundation of this great Nation. Of course it is also the official start of the holiday season and a special time of fellowship with family and friends. After consistent encouragement from Sarah Josepha Hale, writer of “Mary Had a Little Lamb”, President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a nation wide holiday in 1863.

This year while college and NFL football is in swing with limited fan attendance, The Macy’s Day Parade will be a television only event. ” Macy’s confirmed in a statement, “showcasing the Macy’s Parade’s signature mix of giant character helium balloons, fantastic floats, street performers, clowns, and heralding the arrival of the holiday season with the one-and-only Santa Claus.”

So there will still be the magnificent balloons featuring Disney characters and super heroes. These will however not be controlled by humans but rather by specially rigged vehicles. And instead of following the normal route from uptown Manhattan to Midtown, the event will be staged in Herald Square.

In order to provide a set of safety guidelines to help all people stay safe during this pandemic, the CDC has ranked the following activities into three areas: lower risk, moderate risk, and higher risk.

Lower risk activities

  • Having a small dinner with only people who live in your household.
  • Preparing traditional family recipes for family and neighbors, especially those at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19, and delivering them in a way that doesn’t involve contact with others.
  • Having a virtual dinner and sharing recipes with friends and family.
  • Shopping online rather than in person on the day after Thanksgiving or the next Monday.
  • Watching sports events, parades, and movies from home.

Moderate risk activities

  • Having a small outdoor dinner with family and friends who live in your community.
  • Lower your risk by following CDC’s recommendations on gatherings.
  • Visiting pumpkin patches or orchards where people use hand sanitizer before touching pumpkins or picking apples, wearing masks is encouraged or enforced, and people are able to maintain social distancing.
  • Attending a small outdoor sports events with safety precautions in place.

Higher risk activities

  • Going shopping in crowded stores just before, on, or after Thanksgiving.
  • Participating or being a spectator at a crowded race.
  • Attending crowded parades.
  • Using  alcohol or drugs, which can cloud judgement and increase risky behaviors.
  • Attending large indoor gatherings with people from outside of your household.
