The tradition of Thanksgiving

I think most of us know that the origin of Thanksgiving dates back to 1621 when the Pilgrims shared a three day feast with their Native American friends. Friends who helped them get established and survive their first harsh winter in a new land that they were not accustomed to. The feast then consisted of dried fruits, boiled pumpkin, turkey, venison and other foods. Now we feast on gourmet smoked turkeys, hams and all types of dressings and desserts. The theme has always stayed true however.  That theme being a time for us to share blessings that have been bestowed upon us and our family and friends. And a time that has evolved from the celebration of the harvest to a time to give thanks for our foundation of this great Nation.

It was not until 1863 that Thanksgiving was declared a nation wide holiday by President Lincoln. Did you know that he was strongly encouraged to do this by Sarah Josepha Hale? Its true the original writer of “Mary Had a Little Lamb” was also a driving force for Thanksgiving becoming an official National holiday. Another interesting fact is that the Macy’s Day Parade, that has become such great a tradition to watch in many American households, was once put on hold during World War II. Then in 1945 it was reinstated and today remains one of our most loved Thanksgiving Day parades.
