New Year’s Holiday

New Year’s Eve is a special time of celebration around the globe. In the North and South American countries, it is a time of celebrations with parties, firecrackers, music and dancing. It may also have very unique themes in some countries. For example in Ecuador, it is a tradition for the male population to dress in drag with outrageous make-up, wigs and mini skirts. The reason they do this is to make a representation of the “widow” of the year that just passed. As cars drive down their streets, they will stop them and perform some outlandish dance. This forces the cars to stop and give the “widows” money so that they may continue passage.

The main event takes place at midnight when families create life size effigies from paper scraps and used clothing. The fireworks are lit beside the effigies which are usually in front of the family home. This burning of the fireworks and effigies at midnight signifies the shedding of the old year and the beginning of the new.

In Philadelphia, there are numerous celebrations to help you usher in the New Year. On New Year’s Eve there are fireworks on the Delaware River and many restaurants, clubs and bars. Then on New Years Day, the famous Mummers Parade is a spectacular event for the family.

For 120 years the Mummers Parade has entertained thousands with the colorful costumes as 10,000 adults and children march down a main street in Philly. Each member of the parade plays a specific role. There are the Comics and Wench Brigades. This  group pokes fun at issues, institutions and people. Then there are the Fancies. Their outfits are stunning and are designed to imitate royalty. Another group called the String Bands, dazzle the audience with music from their banjo’s, saxophones, percussion and other reed and string instruments. Finally, the group known as the Fancy Brigades produce theatrical shows.
