Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day, celebrated on February 14th, originated as a feast. The feast was held in honor of two saints that were named Valentinus. Today it has taken on a meaning of romantic love in many parts of the world. It is not necessarily deemed a public holiday and some churches like the Lutheran and Eastern Orthodox celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day in July. On the 6th of July the feast is in honor of Roman presbyter Saint Valentine. Then on July 30th, the day is in honor of the Bishop of Interamna.

You will find many stories of martyrdom related to Valentine’s Day. For example Saint Valentine was imprisoned because he performed unapproved weddings. At that time in Rome, it was forbidden for soldier to marry. He also would minister to persecuted Christians. After he was convicted and sentenced to execution, according to legend, he restored the sight of his judge’s daughter. He also wrote her a letter and signed it “Your Valentine”. He died on February 14th AD 269. This day was later designated as The Feast of Saint Valentine by Pope Gelasius I.

It was the 14th century under the influence of Geoffrey Chaucer that this day became associated with romantic love. By the 18th-century in England, couples were expressing their love for each other by gifting flowers, candy and cards. The symbols of Valentine’s Day are most commonly heart shaped, doves or the figure of the flying Cupid. Handwritten notes expressing ones love and devotion have spurred the mass production of greeting cards which is a major industry.
