A British publisher in 1797 issued a publication entitled “The Young Man’s Valentine Writer”. In those times, as well as today, some young men needed a little help coming up with romantic and sentimental verses they could present to their Valentine. The publication was very popular and printers started producing cards and sketches. By the 19th century, factories in England started producing paper Valentines. After that, fancy Valentines made with lace and ribbons became very popular in England.
Esther Howland sold the first embossed paper lace Valentines in 1847. They had been mass produced in the United States. Esther’s father was a book and stationary store operator so he let her sell the lace Valentines. She was inspired by an English Valentine she received from one of her father’s business associates. She then started importing paper lace and floral decorations.
The introduction of chocolates started becoming a thing in 1868. A British company by the name of Cadbury, created what were referred to as “Fancy Boxes”. These heart shaped boxes filled with wonderful chocolates, soon became associated with Valentine’s Day.
Of course now with the popularity of the Internet, millions of people seek out the convenience of using it to send digital messages of Valentine’s Day greetings. E-cards, love coupons and printable greeting cards are some of the most common uses of the Internet. By 2010 it was estimated that 15 million e-valentines were sent.
Approximately 190 million valentines are sent each year in the United States. About one half of those are usually given to children. Teachers are a high number of valentines recipients. Today the average spend on valentines in the U.S. is $131 per person.
