Spring Sonata
Spring is in the air. Our days are beginning to get longer and nights shorter. There are four temperate seasons Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring. Due to the beautiful colors of plants and flowers blooming and the promise of warmer weather, there is an excitement prevalent as we can begin to enjoy the great outdoors. The vivid colors of white, pink and lavender, start to dazzle us as the warmer weather causes trees, plants and flowers to come out of dormancy and begin to proudly display their gorgeous blooms.
It is interesting how the different Hemispheres work. For example when it is the warmer Spring season in the United States and United Kingdom located in the Northern Hemisphere, other countries like Australia and New Zealand located in the Southern Hemisphere are experiencing autumn. So while March, April and May are defined as Spring in the Northern Hemisphere, September, October and November are the Spring months in the Southern Hemisphere.
The scientific explanation for the changing season is that the axis of the earth actually increases its tilt toward the Sun. This tilt naturally increases the amount of daylight and also increases the warmth of temperature. So just as for those of us in states that observe daylight savings time, we and nature Spring forward. One exception is Sweden which defines Spring as the first occasion on which the average temperature exceeds zero degrees Celsius. Of course there are so many varying elevations in Sweden, Spring can come at different times within that country.
Despite the beautiful colors and the promise of warmer weather, Spring can also offer up some issues. Large snow and ice masses begin to melt. This creates large quantities of water that often overrun the banks of streams and rivers that are not able to accommodate the extra water. This naturally causes areas of flooding. Also, as the warmer air meets the still streaming colder air from the North and South Poles, violent weather may occur. Severe thunderstorms, rain, hail and even tornadoes are common occurrences for this time of year.
