May Day
May Day is coming up on May 1st. This fun holiday dates back to ancient times as a festival of Spring. Celebrated in numerous European countries, this beautiful Spring holiday finds people dancing, singing and baking cakes as part of the wonderful festivities.
Several centuries ago, a festival called Floralia was the earliest know date of a celebration related to May Day. Floralia was the festival to honor Flora the goddess of flowers. From April 27th until May 3rd people put on theatrical performances at which hares and goats were released. People attending the celebrations were pelted with beans as part of the festival.
During the 2nd century AD, Maiouma was held. This was known as a “nocturnal dramatic festival”. Occurring every three years in May it was very provocative in nature. The government allowed for many dollars to be set aside for the thirty day festival including eloquent banquets and offerings. However, eventually the festival was ended due to the theme of promiscuity.
Roman Catholics have celebrated May Day since the 18th century. Their devotion on this day is to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to Joseph her husband. To celebrate children put on school skits and decorate the statue of the Virgin Mary with flowers. There is a two day feast to honor Joseph.
In some parts of North America it is tradition to create lovely small baskets filled with colorful Spring flowers. Then people will deliver these baskets on a door step, ring the doorbell and run away.
