Summer Flowers

Summer’s heat and humidity makes it difficult for some plants and flowers to survive. However, there are certain varieties of flowers that thrive in the hot sun. When you purchase flowers for your garden, the tags the nurseries put on them are extremely helpful. For example if a tag reads “full sun” that typically means you should find a place in the garden where the sun light will be present for six or more hours. Conversely if the tag reads “shade”, you should plant the flower in an area of the garden that may only receive a small amount of morning sun.

If you are looking for summer flowers, below is a short list of some you might consider:

  • Lantana – This flower comes in yellow, purple and pink. It is extremely heat and drought resistant.  The sweet smelling blooms attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Depending on how cold the winters get, it may survive as a shrub.
  • Canna – Blooming all summer long, the Canna is a beautiful tropical flower. They cannot survive the cold of winter so they have to be stored inside and replanted in the spring.
  • Portulaca – Very heat and drought tolerant, the Portulaca is a low-growing succulent. It is best used in rock gardens and in full sun.
  • Salvia – The Salvia is a great pollinators plant. It is very fragrant with flowers that are pink, purple and white.
  • Caladium – Needing mostly shade, the Caladium has green heart-shaped leaves with pink flowers. It can be brought indoors in the winter time.
  • Lavender – A perennial plant the Lavender does best in a garden setting. It requires mostly sun.
  • Daylily –  Flowers of the Daylily come in multiple colors and have ruffled petals. They require full sun.
  • Cuphea – Sometimes referred to as the firecracker plant, the Cuphea is a hummingbird magnet. It has bright red and orange flowers and does best in full sun.
  • Fan Flower –  A great spillover plant, the Fan Flower needs full sun. It produces lovely flowers in colors of pink, purple and white. The Fan Flower is perfect as it falls over the edges of window boxes.
  • Ranunculus –  Resembling roses, the Ranunculus requires full sun. In extreme cold the bulbs can be stored indoors and replanted in the spring.
  • Begonia – Hot pink, deep red and bright orange define the beautiful flowers of the Begonia. They grow best in the shade.
  • Poppy – Delicate and papery, the Poppy comes in colors of red, pink and salmon.  They die back in the summer but will return in the spring.
  • Marigold – Requiring full sun, the Marigold is a long time favorite flower. It is very durable and resists insects.
