Christmas Mistletoe

We all know the old tradition that if you are standing under the Mistletoe you are inviting someone to plant a kiss. This concept became common during the Christian era in the Western part of the world.  At Christmas time, not only was under the Mistletoe the spot for lovers to kiss as a display of their affection but it was also thought to be protection from witches and demons. A symbol of fertility during the Middle Ages,  Mistletoe was quite common in celebrations of Christmas. An 18th Century belief said that a man was allowed to kiss a woman standing under the Mistletoe. If she refused the kiss she would be cursed with bad luck.

Christmas Poinsettia

In 1828, an American botanist, physician and Minister to Mexico by the name of Joel Roberts Poinsett discovered a beautiful red plant while working in Southern Mexico. He was so impressed with the beauty that he sent cuttings of the plant to his home in Charleston, South Carolina. From there the acceptance and love for this plant continued to develop. The scientific name for the plant is Euphorbia Pulchritude but it is commonly referred to as Poinsettia.   Mr. Poinsett died on December 12th in 1851 at the age of 72. December 12th is now known as Poinsettia day in his honor.

This beautiful red star plant is displayed annually in homes, businesses and churches across the country. Poinsettias are also the best selling potted plants in the U.S. and Canada. It is estimated the each year the sale of Poinsettias accountant for approximately $250,000,000. In July of 2002, the House of Representatives created Poinsettia Day.

One story In Mexico centers around a young girl wanting to have a gift to honor Baby Jesus during a Christmas Procession. She was so sad because she had nothing to bring. As the story goes, an angel came to her and said that any gift that is a gift of love is the best possible gift one can provide to Jesus. The young girl then proceeded to collect weeds by the roadside. She laid the weeds at the manger and they blossomed into beautiful Poinsettias.  Thus Poinsettias are referred to as the Flower of the Holy Night in Mexico or “La Flor de la Nochebuena”.
