World Autism Awareness Day

Autism is a disorder that effects 1 in 54 children in the United States. It usually begins to show signs by the time the child is 2 to 3 years old. Though it can start to appear in children as young as 18 months. Autism effects the ability to interact in social settings. Early detection and intervention, like with most disorders, is normally very helpful to increase the chances of positive outcomes later in life.

April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day. On December 18, 2007, this day was officially designated as  such by the “United Nations General Assembly”.  Devoted to raising awareness for people with autism, all states are encouraged to do their part for this cause. In the 2013  fifth addition of the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” submitted by the “American Psychiatric Association” the conditions of autism were lumped into one category.

The conditions of severity, varied characteristics and the detectable symptoms are the defining characteristics that put autism in its on category. In addition to the normal symptoms related to social disorders, there are frequently additional issues related to gastrointestinal disorders, seizures or sleep disorders. Often people will also suffer with mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression and attention issues.

In 1911, Psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler was the first account of someone using the term Autism. In his description of the issue he alluded to a multitude of symptoms including schizophrenia resulting in extreme cases of social withdrawal.  Sometimes referred to as a Spectrum Disorder, autism is a developmental disorder that is effects behavior and communicative abilities of a person. It leaves people without the ability to navigate social interactions which results in  restricted behavior.

“Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact”,  an article published by  Dr. Leo Kanner 1943 and one written in 1944 by Hans Asperger entitled “Autism Psychopathology Article” were valuable to future studies. By 1980, autism was defined as a disorder that was not tied to schizophrenia. Today it is known that children with autism whether possessing normal or even  above average intelligence are not able to function with social or communication skills.
