Holocaust Remembrance Day
Holocaust Remembrance Day was established by Congress and is the United States annual commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust. This year the day falls on April 21st. In Hebrew the actual name for Holocaust Remembrance Day is Yom Hashoah.
An estimated six million Jewish people were put to death between 1941 and 1945. This was during the time at which the German invasion of the Soviet Union and the end of the war in Europe in May 1945 occurred. Nazi Germany and their collaborators ordered the execution of Jewish people. The systematic killing was devised to eliminate every person of Jewish faith.
1933 is considered to be the beginning of the Holocaust era by numerous historians. During this time, in January of 1933, Hitler started his climb to power. Nazi persecution of the Jews was the focus of the Hitler regime. The Jewish people were targeted for elimination like no other group.
The term Holocaust was actually used starting in 1960 by the English speaking world. The Hebrew word is Shoah which references catastrophe. This best describes the event.
Many people feel that the Holocaust is a tremendous lesson about how our actions, when faced with injustice to others, can have a life long effect on the outcome. The theme of Holocaust Remembrance Day is “Never Again: What You Do Matters”. Many German citizens disapproved of the injustices during the Holocaust era. Perhaps due to fear, very few took action to try and intervene. Of course there were some brave citizens that did attempt to make a difference and stop the violence. None the less, Jewish people were stripped of their citizenship and basic human rights.
