4th of July in Philadelphia – 2020
Life has changed in 2020 not only for the United States but also for the majority of us around the globe. Philadelphia has historically been one of the best cities to celebrate the US independence day or 4th of July as it is most commonly called. However for the first time in 28 years there will not be crowded concerts and fireworks celebrations. Instead Philly’s Fourth of July party will be a virtual celebration.
Citizen’s are asked to watch the festivities from their homes. They will be broadcast live from a location in Philadelphia. According the City Mayor Jim Kenney, The Wawa Welcome America festival has been moved to virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic. Mayor Kenney portrays positive leadership by stating “Philadelphia is a city of strong traditions, and I’m excited to see this tradition continue”.
The virtual celebration will be free and will be a seven day event. One positive aspect of a virtual festival and concert is that the audience will most likely be larger than ever before. And people will be safe. Of course locations where people typically gather will be secured and there will be no access to jumbotrons to watch the concert. There is still talk of fireworks but the Mayor said those details are still in the planning stages. Regardless these displays will not allow for the general public to view onsite.
Just like in all parts of America, social distancing is the current norm in Philly. In years past the free Fourth of July celebration in Philadelphia lasted for an entire week. Things like block parties, performances, hoagie eating contests and a magnificent concert held on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway attended by at least 175,000 people took place. Some of the past big name stars that performed were Pitbull and Mary J Blige just to name a few.
