April is Stress Awareness Month, and learning how to reduce stress should be a priority for all of us. Stress can harm us in many ways. The National Institute of Mental Health says that prolonged stress can disturb the immune, digestive, cardiovascular, sleep, and reproductive systems. The World Health Organization estimates that stress costs American businesses $300 billion a year in health care, sick days and lost productivity. We all know that good nutrition, exercise, outdoor activities, relaxing hobbies, managing priorities and setting goals can all help reduce stress.

The University of North Florida’s Department of Public Health has completed research that concludes stress levels are significantly reduced when we experience the fragrance and beauty off flowers. This bolsters the results of previous studies at Harvard, Rutgers and Texas A&M that demonstrate flowers’ ability to make people happy, strengthen feelings of compassion, foster creativity and even increase energy levels.
