On April 22nd the last Wednesday in April, Administrative Professional Day will be observed by the United States, Canada, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Sometimes referred to as Secretaries Day or Admin Day, it is also observed by New Zealand on the third Wednesday in April,  Belgium, France and the Netherlands on the third Thursday in April,  Australia on the first Friday of May, and South Africa on the first Wednesday of September.

Secretaries, administrative assistants, executive assistants, personal assistants,  receptionists, client services representatives, and other administrative support professionals that fall into this broad category are all considered for recognition of Administrative Professionals Day.  Thank you cards, flowers, chocolates, and lunches are a few of the most common gestures of appreciation.

During the 1930’s,  The Great Depression is attributed to a declining birth rate. In addition, the years following the first war were highly focused on the rebuilding of US business. These two events created a vast shortage of administrative workers. So in 1942, The National Secretaries Association was founded. This group formed in order to honor those that worked in the administrative field and to potentially convince other US citizens to consider this as a career.

Mary Barrett, C. King Woodbridge, Daren Ball and  Harry F. Klemfuss were influential members of the National Secretaries Association that are credited with the origination of the holiday. Mary Barrett was the president of the Association. C. King Woodbridge was the president of the Dictaphone Corporation. Daren Ball and Harry Klemfuss were public relation account executives at Young and Rubicam.

Professional Secretaries International became the name of the association in 1981. Years later in 1998 the name was changed to the International Association of Administrative Professionals. That name has been trademarked.
