Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Recognized as a national holiday, Thanksgiving originated as a harvest festival. In 1961 the Pilgrims and the Native Americans had a joint celebration feast in honor of their bountiful harvest. Historians estimate there were 143 people that were present for the first Thanksgiving, 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims. It is generally regarded as being the beginning of the fall and winter holiday season in our American culture.

Of course Thanksgiving is not just a holiday recognized in the United States. Other countries also have their version of giving thanks. Some of those countries are Australia, Canada, Grenada, Liberia, Netherlands, and the Philippines. Their version of the holiday is, in some cases, quite different from our traditional concept. For example in Liberia they celebrate Thanksgiving on the first Thursday of November. The origination is founded on the freedom of African Americans from the United States who then colonized in 1820 to form the country of Liberia.

Thanksgiving remains, for those of us in the United States, a grand celebration of our blessings throughout the year. Generally considered the official start of what we refer to as the “Holiday Season”,  Thanksgiving is celebrated by spectacular parades like the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, sports events and of course the start of the Christmas shopping season.
