Veterans Day is a federal holiday respectfully designated to celebrate the service of all U.S. military veterans. There are other days that coincide with Veterans Day, for example Armistice Day and Remembrance Day. These days are mostly celebrated in other countries and mark the end of World War I. There is a reason why November 11th was selected to be honored as Veterans Day. That reason is that on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, all major hostilities of World War I were formally halted. Then in 1954 the day was renamed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day.
Did you know that there is no apostrophe in Veterans Day? Some mistakenly think it is spelled Veteran’s or Veterans’ Day. That is an honest mistake but the day is designated to multiple veterans not just a single veteran. Therefore there is no apostrophe required.
A similar yet very different public holiday is Memorial Day. Both days are created in honor of those who have fought tirelessly to protect our great Nation. The difference is that Memorial Day is designated as a day of remembrance for those who have died defending us while in the military. Veterans Day is a day to celebrate all U.S. military veterans.
